We decided to rally Noel, Dom, Zoe and baby Violet to go camping with us for a few days at Goldstream Provincial Park, a ferry ride and a couple hours’ drive from Noel and Dom’s home on Gabriola Island. It was a good spot since it was only a half hour drive to the ferry that would take us back to the States via Port Angeles in Olympic National Park in Washington in a couple days.

Goldstream was AWESOME. The campground was laid out beautifully with well-spaced sites among very tall fir trees. There was a river that ran through the park, and we all hiked down to it to find a swimming hole while we were there. The river was a bit chilly but the water was super clear and the salmon were only a few inches big so as we swam around in the water they kept bumping into us… or biting us. It didn’t hurt, but it was kinda weird and I could only hang in the water a few minutes before I had to go into shallow water to escape the little fishies. Chris and the rest of the crew did a hike up to Mt Finleyson in the park, while I went grocery shopping and made dinner (tacos). They came back like three hours after they’d left – exhausted, sweaty and dirty. Apparently the hike was extreme but everyone made it to the top. I saw some video and pics of their hike later and couldn’t believe the boys carried the babies on their backs up the trail and eight year old Zoe made it all the way up the super steep inclines.

It was a quick two-day camping trip, but we did manage to check out Victoria. As cities go, it felt pretty small but I liked that. There was every shop and kind of food anyone could wish for, and the capitol building was quite beautiful (Victoria is the capitol of BC). All in all, we had a great time at the campground and in the city. Our time there was short and sweet and we didn’t want to say good-bye to the family but we had to keep moving south. We were headed to the west coast of the US, which meant we weren’t very far from home now!
