Castle Rock & Holcomb Valley Pinnacles Rock Climbing Big Bear, Ca

We were lucky enough to spend a weekend away with Reggie, Courtney and Killian at the Sullivan cabin in Big Bear. We were able to setup a few top ropes on Castle Rock and Holcomb Valley Pinnacles. This was the first time Reggie and I setup the top ropes with all our own knots and anchors. Luckily both areas were bolted and easy to find climbs within our range.

Here are a few pictures and links to the spots. I couldn’t find a good guide book that included Castle Rock. Holcomb Valley Pinnacles has some info in the guidebook Southern California Rock Climbing  (which was in stock at REI not online). While it included some of the popular walls that was about it. There are over 200 routes in the Pinnacles and Mountain Project was the only info I could locate.

The first spot we hiked into was Castle Rock, which is about a 30 minute hike up hill. There are some cool routes but we only had time to setup one top rope and I’m pretty sure we were on the east face.

The second and by far the place to climb in Big Bear was Holcomb Valley Pinnacles.

Tons of fun for a couple of rookies.
